Mongolia by train and 4x4

€2,390.00

Zamiin Uud - Ulaanbaatar - Erdenet - Kharkhorin - Khan Khentii - Ulaanbaatar

·    30.4. Meet and greet at the city of Zamiin Uud. In the next days, we will cross the country from south to north and west to east. We will have a walking tour in this Soviet-planned wasteland town and visit the local Buddhist monastery. In the afternoon, we will take the night train to Ulaanbaatar through the mysterious Trans-Mongolian Railway connecting China and Russia, built in the 1940s. Dinner in the restaurant wagon in a more than 60-year-old Soviet train heated by coal.

·     1.5. Morning arrival in the capital city of Mongolia - Ulaanbaatar. Today, we will walk the city on foot as the traffic situation in this city is very bad. Visit to the city centre and Sukhbaatar Square, followed by a walk through Soviet apartment blocks called “ugsarmal” by locals to the vibrant Narantuul market and the beautiful piece of Zaisan Monument that honors Mongolian and Soviet soldiers killed in WW2. Afternoon visit to the Gandantegchinlen monastery, followed by visiting the outskirts of the city, where people still live in yurts between the high-rise buildings. Traditional Mongolian dinner in the evening.

·     2.5. On our 4×4, we are leaving busy Ulaanbaatar today. We are going to have lunch in the steppe for the first time and watch horses, eagles, cows, camels, yaks, and more. Afternoon, we are arriving at the mining capital of the country - Erdenet. The industrial town was built by the Soviets in 1974. We will have a walk around the beautiful monuments and mosaics here and visit a viewpoint overlooking this really pleasant city.

·    3.5. We are leaving Erdenet for a visit to the Amarbayasgalant monastery deep in the Mongolian Taiga. In our jeep, we are having a drive through the dirt road, and we get to this beautiful place around lunchtime. The monastery, built 300 years ago and partially destroyed in the 1940s, is located in the middle of the mountains. After check-in in our yurts, we will have a visit to the monastery, followed by a hike in this wilderness. Sleep in traditional yurt tents with watching the stars two hours after midnight for those in favor.

·     4.5. Today we are heading for a full day drive to the city of Kharkhorin. We will stop in Elsen Tasarkhai and Khugnu Tarna to visit the natural sand dunes. After arriving in Kharkhorin, we will have a walk around the city, the shipping containers market, and visit the Great Mongolia Monument with beautiful valley views on the other side of the place. The city of Kharkhorin used to be the capital city during Chinggis Khaan's time; nowadays, it is a sleepy town with its own atmosphere.

·     5.5. We have a very eventful day ahead. Early morning, we are leaving to see the beautiful Orkhon waterfall with a very scenic route through the Orkhon Valley, followed by the Ogii lake in central Mongolia´s steppe, which hosts a lot of specific species of birds. In the late afternoon, we are back for a visit to the Erdene-Zuu monastery and the Soviet abandoned factory in the city. In this place, there is still a possibility of snow in May.

·   6.5. In the morning, we are driving back to Ulaanbaatar direction, heading east with stops in Bogd Khan. The beautiful national park Gorkhi Terelj awaits us in the afternoon. We will have a look at the Turtle Rock and hike around the park, and also ride a Mongolian horse for those in favor. We will have a good dinner after the long day and get ready for our last full day in Mongolia.

·     7.5. Today, we are going to visit the deepest wilderness on our trip. In the morning, we will head to the Nuur Lake, located in the Khan Khentii National Park located approximately 50 kilometres from the main road. The drive here is really challenging, and we all can try it. Close to this lake, Chinggis Khan was born, and he also reunited the Mongol tribes on the southern shore of the lake. In May, the lake is still partially frozen, which makes it beautiful with slightly green mountains behind. We will visit the Mongol unity monument and have some calm time here. Evening drive to Ulaanbaatar.

·     8.5. On our last day, we will visit the National Museum of Mongolia and the vibrant Soviet part of the city. We will visit the local market for shopping for souvenirs and local food. Evening or next day flight home.
